Everything you need to know about Colonic Hydrotherapy

I have compiled a list of questions but if there is anything I haven’t covered please just call me or use the contact form.

What is colonic hydrotherapy?

Also known as a "colonic", "colon lavage", colon irrigation", or "high colonic", colonic hydrotherapy is a safe, effective method for cleansing the colon of waste material by repeated, gentle flushing with water.

What are some of the health benefits to be expected from colonics?

Some of the health benefits from colonics may include:

  • Weight release
  • Clearer skin and complexion
  • Frequent bowel movements
  • Improved lymphatic circulation
  • Purified blood
  • Elimination of mucus
  • Mental clarity
  • More energy or vitality
  • Elimination of worms and parasites
  • Enhanced activity of major eliminative channels and organs

How often should I have colonics performed?

Ideally if it is your first time having a colonic performed, you should have a series of at least 3 colonics at weekly intervals.

After your initial 3 sessions of colonics, you may simply opt to have colonics (one session) performed once a month, a series of 3 colonics performed every three months, or whatever schedule best suits your health needs and personal schedule.

However, you don't need colonics performed regularly unless of course you are a serious meat, dairy, and junk food eater and have no plans to change your diet; then, and only then, would it make sense to have colonics performed on a regular basis.

What happens during a colonic treatment?

At your first appointment I will take your case history followed by a thorough explanation of the procedure. During the colonic treatment itself you will be relaxing on a treatment couch in complete comfort. A small speculum is gently inserted into the rectum, through which warm filtered water passes in to the colon. The warm purified water is run very slowly into the colon and when slight pressure builds up in the colon, the water is gently released along with faeces, gas and mucus. This technique is accompanied with light abdominal massage to increase peristalsis (the muscular action of the colon which moves waste through). This helps loosen faecal impaction, dislodge toxic waste matter adhering to the walls of the colon and will assist in moving gas through.

Eliminations during subsequent therapy sessions can be even more substantial as older, hardened, impacted faeces are dislodged from the colon walls. The speculum has a separate water and waste line that is attached to the hydrotherapy equipment. All waste is discreetly transported into the sewage without offensive odour and without compromising your dignity. After each colonic session the equipment is thoroughly sterilised using hospital steralants or items are clinically disposed of.

A colonic session usually lasts about 45-60 minutes.

The process is typically painless perhaps with the exception of the insertion of the speculum into the rectum which could cause a little discomfort physically and psychologically (a lot of people are adverse to having something inserted into their anus).

Though some people may feel shy that their bottom is being exposed to a stranger, however, this person (stranger) should be seen and viewed as someone who is helping you - helping you to reclaim and restore your health, especially the health of your colon.

  • I will ask you to lean or turn on one side so I can insert the speculum into your rectum via your anus. It helps to take a deep breath before the speculum is being inserted.
  • After the speculum has been inserted, I will ask you to lie on your back and put your legs up with your knees bent and your feet flat.
  • Your head should rest comfortably on the pillow on the couch.
  • I will turn on the water lever allowing cool to moderately warm water enter into your colon via the rectum. You will or should feel the water entering your body.
  • After a certain amount of water is entered into your body I will begin to massage your stomach or press into your stomach (so as to break up gas pockets and to loosen hardened stools or feces that are like bricks along the walls of your colon).
  • After doing the above for a few seconds or minutes, I will turn the lever allowing a release (of water, faeces, and other debris). It is also normal upon the first few releases to see that your water coming out of you is clear. If this is the case, chances are you're pretty blocked and it may take some time for a release full of waste to exit your body. Many times, people don't have a good release due to psychological factors (i.e. embarrassment, shyness, feeling awkward, etc.).
  • Many times it may feel like you have to poo (defecate) during the session but the feeling is usually due to the inundation of the bowels with water.
  • After the speculum is removed from your rectum, I will ask you to go and sit on the toilet for a few minutes so as to release any water still in your colon and/or rectum. To help expel water, press on your stomach (about 2 inches under your navel) with your fingers for a few seconds. Press in different spots around the front of your stomach.

What can I expect to see during my colonic treatment?

You could possibly see old faecal matter (which you can tell by its dark colour). Dark coloured faecal matter denotes old faecal matter stored in the body possibly for years or decades. Lighter coloured faecal matter denotes most recent faecal matter from recent foods consumed.

Whatever you may see, just be thankful it is leaving your body.

What should I remember during my colonic session?

Don't talk a lot during the session. In fact, it's best not to talk at all. All the necessary talking should be done prior to the actual procedure. During the session simply close your eyes and calmly inhale through your nose and blow out of your mouth.

Relax during the session. There is nothing to worry about. There is no need to fear or worry.

It's great to release toxic thoughts during the session. Many of us are not just full of shit literally, we are also full of shit mentally which is why a lot of us always have "shit on our mind!" (meaning that we are preoccupied with thought, usually worldly thoughts).

What should I do after my colonic?

The best thing to consume after your colonic session would be vegetable juice (if possible), followed by a big green leafy salad. Next would be steamed vegetables and maybe some brown rice. Simply remember to eat light, not heavy, after your colonic.

And the colon, what is that again?

The colon, or large intestine, is the end portion of the human digestive tract (food carrying passageway extending from the mouth to the anus.

The colon is approximately 5 feet long and 2 1/2 inches in diameter. Its major functions are to eliminate waste and to conserve water.

What is the purpose of having a colonic?

Waste material, especially that which has remained in the colon for some time, (i.e. impacted faeces, dead cellular tissue, accumulated mucus, parasites, worms, etc.), poses several problems. First this material is quite toxic (poisonous). These poisons can re-enter and circulate in the blood stream making us feel ill, tired or weak. Second, impacted materials impair the colon's ability to assimilate nutrients. Finally, a buildup of material on the colon wall can inhibit muscular action causing sluggish bowel movements, constipation, and the result of these disorders.

How can I tell if I have toxic material in my colon?

This condition is prevalent in all civilised societies, and particularly in the U.K. Common signs include: headaches, backaches, constipation, fatigue, bad breath, body odour, irritability, confusion, skin problems, abdominal gas, bloating, diarrhoea, sciatic pain, and so forth. As you can see, intestinal toxicity is part and parcel of many peoples everyday experience.

Is intestinal toxicity a common condition?

Yes it is, but toxicity is not limited to just the colon. Toxic material is found throughout the body, particularly in fat tissue, joints, arteries, muscles, liver, etc. Colonics effectively eliminate large quantities of toxic waste, affecting the condition of the entire body.

The colon isn't the only organ of elimination, what makes the colonic so important?

While the lungs, skin, kidneys and liver also serve to eliminate toxins, people have experienced throughout history that when they ensure that the colon is cleansed and healed, the wellbeing of the whole body is greatly enhanced. Colonic hydrotherapy has been found to be the most effective process available to accomplish this work quickly and easily.

Will the colonic fix my bowel and my digestion?

Colonic hydrotherapy is a tool. It is a powerful tool that gives you a head start in improving the results of your diet, lifestyle and exercise regime. However, a tool is only as good as the person using it. If you use colonics to help your body improve, feel younger and work more effectively, then this is what you will achieve. However, if you use colonic as roadside assistance only, then you will achieve a short-term rather than a long-term improvement.

What makes a colonic so special?

In a 45 minute session approximately 60 litres of water is used to gently flush the colon. Through appropriate use of massage the colon therapist is able to work loose and eliminate far more toxic waste than any other short-term technique.

What will colonics do to the colon?

Specifically, a colonic is used to accomplish the following:

  • Cleanse the Colon: Toxic material is broken down so it can no longer harm your body or inhibit assimilation and elimination. Even debris built up over a long period is gently, but surely removed in the process of a series of treatments. Once impacted material is removed, your colon can begin again to co-operate as it was intended to. In this very real sense a colonic is a rejuvenation treatment.
  • It Exercises the Colon Muscles: The build up of toxic debris weakens the colon and impairs its functioning. The gentle filling and emptying of the colon improves peristaltic (muscular contraction) activity by which the colon naturally moves material.
  • It Reshapes the Colon: When problem conditions exist in the colon, they tend to alter its shape which in turn causes more problems. The gentle action of the water, coupled with the massage techniques of the colon therapist helps to eliminate bulging pockets of waste and narrowed, spastic constrictions, finally enabling the colon to resume its natural state.
  • It Stimulates Reflex Points: Every system and organ in the body is connected to the colon by reflex points. Colonics stimulates these points, thereby affecting the corresponding body parts in a beneficial way.

Are there any additional benefits I might expect from a colonic?

Yes, there are several. You will learn to expand your awareness of your body's functioning by including signals from your abdomen, your skin, your face and even from that most taboo of natural products, your eliminations. You will find that you can spot the beginnings of developing conditions through clues from these body regions and functions before they become serious. You can deal with them sooner and more easily than you otherwise might if you waited until they produce effects seen elsewhere in the body. Also, the solar plexus is the emotional centre of the body and the transverse colon passes right through it. If an emotional event is left incomplete, it often results in physical tension being stored in the solar plexus, which affects all organs in this area, including the colon. This on-going tightening of the colon muscle results in diminished movement of faecal material through the colon, which is experienced as constipation. Not only do colonics alleviate the constipation, they can assist you in creating a fully holistic view of your body's functions, leading to a better quality of life.

What are the characteristics of a healthy, well functioning colon?

Healthy babies, animals and adults not subjected to the "refinements" of civilisation (i.e. aboriginal peoples) have bowel movements shortly after each meal is eaten. So, assuming there is sufficient fibre and water available to the colon, one characteristic is a bowel movement shortly after a meal is eaten. Once the urge to eliminate is honoured by a trip to the toilet, the elimination should be easy and take no more than a few seconds. The stool will be long, large in diameter, light brown in colour, without offensive odour and should float or sink very slowly. When the toilet is flushed, the stool immediately begins breaking apart by the action of water movement. As incredible as this may sound, it is true and commonly experienced in cultures where people live more naturally.

How can I tell if I would personally benefit from a colonic?

Does your colon now exhibit the signs of a well functioning colon ? If not, a course of treatments may bring you great dividends.

Will it be painful?

A colonic should never be painful. You will be put at ease during your treatment thus minimising discomfort. Most people actually enjoy the colonic and are especially pleased with the unaccustomed sensation of feeling lighter, clean and clear afterward. Sometimes during a colonic, the colon muscles will contract suddenly expelling considerable amounts of liquid and waste into the rectum. This may feel like cramping or gas, and may create a feeling of urgency to empty the rectum. Such episodes, if they do occur, are brief and easily tolerated.

Is it safe?

Yes. The water is introduced at a low gravitational pressure, so there is no danger of bowel perforation. All equipment is either disposable or disinfected using hospital approved disinfectant solutions, which kill all viruses, bacteria or fungi.

Will I lose weight?

Maybe, but just bear in mind that you lose waste only, not fat or cellulite. If you start eating less, increase your fibre intake, move more, chew better and drink more water, then you will achieve the weight loss.

Is it embarrassing to have a colonic?

Of course it is. No one wants to have this done to them. With that in mind, I do all I can to help you feel comfortable, safe, and at ease. Once you get started, you feel so good, that you wish you had come in much sooner. The initial phone call, for most people, is the hardest part. Most of my clients say they are nervous and this is their first time, but usually within 10 minutes of starting their session they are very comfortable. When they are finished they are so excited they want their family and friends to do this, but then their friends are likely to go through the same anxiety. I understand this and l do all I can to make this a comfortable, if not fun, experience!

Does it hurt?

The procedure does not cause pain. At the start of the procedure you may experience a “strange” sensation of wanting to go to the toilet, but most people get used to this feeling in the first few minutes, and even find the colonic treatment “unexpectedly relaxing”.

Is there anything I need to do to get ready for a colonic?

Since your abdomen will be massaged it is a good idea to eat or drink lightly in the 2 hours immediately preceding a colonic. Also helpful, but not essential, emptying the rectum with a bowel movement just prior to the colonic saves time and permits more to be accomplished. Please do not worry if you are unable to do this.

And what can I expect afterwards?

Most likely you'll feel great. Probably you'll feel lighter and enjoy a sense of well-being. As soon as the colonic is finished you can carry on with daily routine. For some, the colonic may trigger several subsequent bowel movements for the next few hours, but there won't be any uncontrollable urgency or discomfort. It's also possible you may feel light-headed or chilled for a few moments following a colonic.

Are colonics habit forming?

The colonic is a tool intended to be used to create a clean and healthy colon. I am dedicated to your health and I will encourage you to set a goal of having a well-functioning colon. My fulfilment comes from assisting you in healing your colon, not in making you dependent upon colonics.

Suppose I have been suffering from constipation for a long time, will colonics help?

I want to state that constipation can be successfully treated with natural, harmless techniques, including the use of colonics. Constipation is one of what may be termed as "civilised man's diseases". There are three factors involved in having a well functioning colon: diet, exercise and attitude. All three must be in balance for the colon to function well. Often, however, because the colon has been sluggish for so long, it has become severely weakened due to being constantly bathed in toxic waste, stretched from holding excessive amounts of stools, and frequently constricted by chronic tension. The process of colonic hydrotherapy is excellent for cleansing and healing the colon sufficiently so that changes in diet, exercise, and attitude are then able to produce their effects. Many people find the relief provided by colonics stimulates their motivation and enthusiasm to incorporate positive changes in their lifestyle.

Some say that colonics wash out intestinal flora and valuable nutrients. Is this so?

The truth is that the washing out of putrefied material in the large intestine increases the good intestinal flora. Good bacteria can only breed in a clean environment which has been washed free of putrefaction and its accompanying harmful bacteria. This is why the intestines of a newborn baby immediately begin to grow good intestinal flora. Each time you clean out the putrefying rubbish and make a better environment for the good flora, they start to multiply immediately in their natural media. It also stands to reason that valuable nutrients can better be absorbed in a clean environment than in a putrefied one. If your system is in particular need, for example, if you are taking antibiotics, a course of probiotics will be advised.

What effect does colonic hydrotherapy have on our immune systems?

The removal of stagnant waste material and hardened, impacted toxic residue could rejuvenate the immune tissue that resides in the intestines. Recent European studies speculate that 80% of immune tissue resides in the intestines. Colon Hydrotherapy is not a cure-all, but an important adjunctive therapy in our overall health care.

How long does a colonic take?

The treatment takes about 45 minutes. There will also be about 15 minutes required before the colonic to go over your medical history, another 10 minutes should be allowed for changing. On a first colonic you should expect to spend approximately an hour to an hour and 15 minutes at the clinic.

How many treatments do I need?

After your first session I will advise you on the number of sessions that you will require for optimum benefit. It all depends on your condition and on the results of the first colonic. If a condition has been building up for years, it is unlikely that it will disappear completely after 40-50 minutes of cleansing, but most people feel improvements after the very first session. If you adopt dietary and lifestyle modifications, if they are required, then the number of colonics will be reduced, and the periods between colonics will be longer. Your budget will obviously affect your decision on whether you go with the recommendation, but as a rule one is better than none, two better than one and so on.

Will it be okay to eat after having a colonic?

We suggest that you eat a moderate amount of whatever seems gentle and nourishing to you. Just as it doesn't make sense to have your car cleaned and then immediately drive it through mud, eating a meal known to cause trouble in your abdomen directly after a colonic isn't an intelligent choice. Salads, vegetable soups or broths, fruit, or juices are the best choice.

Will one colonic completely empty the colon?

Almost never. Many of us have a considerable amount of impacted faeces in our colon. This is hardened, rubbery or wallpaper-like material. Substantial work must be done to remove it. One colonic will remove some of the stagnant waste in the colon. The second and subsequent colonics will remove more. How many you may wish to have will depend upon your personal objectives.

How will I know when the colon is empty?

It will probably never be completely empty as it is an organ in continuous use. As more of the old impacted material is released you will actually feel the water enter higher regions of the colon without any sense of obstruction. The objective should not be an empty colon, but rather a well functioning colon.

Do you recommend supplements after a colonic treatment?

In an ideal world, if you lived on naturally fertile farmland and ate organic home-grown freshly cut vegetables, berries and fruit, fish from the river, natural live yoghurt etc you would not need any supplements (and, as a matter of fact, you would not need a detox programme either!) However, in the real world we need to assist our bodies to self-cleanse, hence the need for supplementation.

What supplements do you recommend for maintenance between colonic treatments?

Probiotic supplements are recommended to give a head start to the good bacteria that populate our bowel and that ensure absorption by the body of nutrients and vitamins from our food. Supplements will cost you per day far less than a cup of cappuccino, a pint of lager or a glass of wine. Once you have invested in a colonic treatment then low cost maintenance definitely makes sense.

Will a colonic clear up my skin?

Your skin actually "breathes" and is an important organ of elimination for waste material. Sometimes, if the colon, liver or kidneys are functioning poorly, the skin will be required to make up the difference. Surface eruptions on the skin of various sorts may occur due to toxins being released. Cleansing and healing the colon diminishes the burden placed upon the skin as well as the other organs of elimination: lungs, liver and kidneys. As elimination is accomplished through its proper channels, the skin will very often clear up. You may also need to adjust your hydration levels in order to support your skin.

Can I have a colonic if I am having a period?

This is a personal choice but it certainly wouldn’t effect you having a colonic.

Can I have a colonic if I am pregnant?

We would not recommend colonics during pregnancy unless it is recommended and performed by a qualified medical practitioner specialising in pregnancy.

How soon after childbirth can I have a colonic? Can I have it while I am breastfeeding?

You can have a colonic 10-12 weeks after a regular childbirth, unless you had complications or a caesarean. You need to decide for yourself whether your body has recovered enough from the shock! Make sure your stitches have healed fully, talk to your doctor or nurse if in doubt. You can have a colonic whilst you are breast feeding.

What will I feel like after the treatment?

Generally, you will be able to continue with your daily plans, drive, go back to work etc. Some people feel energised straight away, some feel tired “in a nice way” - in the same way as one feels tired after a good workout, some feel lighter, some feel very hungry, some don’t feel like eating for hours afterwards…. I don’t recommend eating heavy food and drinking alcohol, coffee or tea for 48 to 72 hours after the treatment to get the full benefit of the detoxification process.

Will I be able to drive home after the colonic?

Most people do not find it difficult to drive back after their colonic treatment.

How expensive is a colonic?

The cost per treatment is £70.00 payable by card, cheque or cash. Although cost is obviously relevant, good health is far more important.

Cancellation Policy

I do understand that sometimes cancellations cannot be avoided. However, in line with other practices I do have a standard cancellation policy. A fee of half the appointment cost will be charged if I am given less than 24 hours notice of a cancellation.
